IAEG Meeting of Executive Committee and Council Held in Banff

IAEG has held its Meetings of Executive Committee and Council on June 2 and 3, 2012 in Banff, Canada during the 11th International and 2nd North American Symposium on Landslides. The president of IAEG professor Carlos Delgado chaired the meetings. 

I. Executive Committee Meeting

10 of 11 members attended the Executive Committee meeting on June 2nd. Carlos made the welcome address, and the main issues have been discussed on the meeting:

Carlos introduced the financial report for 2012 and budget for 2013. The members suggest set up a special fund for promoting the communication of vice presidents with their responsible national groups and increase the budget for improvement of website.

The members of Technical Overseeing Committee (TOC) made their reports on the active state of IAEG Commissions and stressed to make effort to activate their activities.

The state of membership was introduced by the Secretary General. It is stressed to promote the recruitment of the IAEG members and national groups, and there should be a warning to the inactive national groups.

The plan for the memorial book of IAEG 50th anniversary is approved. And the progress on Bulletin, website and the preparation for IAEG2014 congress has also been reported on the meeting.

IAEG Executive Committee Meeting

II. The Council Meeting

The Council meeting was held on 3rd June. Representatives of 23 national and regional groups, 10 Executive Committee members, 2 past presidents and chairmen of 7 Commissions attended the meeting.

The Secretary General of International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS), professor Peter T. Bobrowsky and the observer from International Society of Rock Mechanics (ISRM) and International Tunneling and Underground Space Association (ITA), Dr. Erik Eberhardt were invited to present the meeting and make addresses. 

Carlos chaired the meeting, and made the welcome address. The following issues have been discussed and related decisions have been made in the meeting:

1. Activities of the president

The president Carlos Delgado introduced his activities during past year. He said that he had made effort to push the activities of commissions. He has visited China to promote the membership recruitment and attract supporting members. To improve the relationship with sister international societies such as ISRM, ISSMGE, FedIGS and IUGS, he had travel a lot in the last year. He has also made effort for the preparation of the 50 anniversary book and IAEG2014 congress. 

2. Progress of the secretariat

The Secretary General Faquan Wu gave the work report of the secretariat in the last year. 

He said that the membership of IAEG has made a 16% increase in the year and the total number of individual members increased to 3513. The national groups with more than 200 members are Germany, China, New Zealand, Australia and United Kingdom. And Germany with more than 500 members keeps the first for many years. 7 national groups, i.e. Sweden, Finland, Singpore, Belgium, China, New Zealand, and Australia have made big progress on the membership recruitment and activation. The secretariat has kept closed connection with national groups to push their activities.

The Newsletter has been regularly prepared and published in our website, the relationship with Springer has been improved and the Bulletin and E-tokens have been distributed as plan. 

A new regional group, "Hong Kong (SAR) Regional Group" has been approved to establish and Dr. Steve Parry, the chairperson of the group indicated that there will be 200 members involved into IAEG community. 

3. The financial state of IAEG

Entrusted by Pierre Potherat, the financial report for 2010-2011 and the budget for 2012-2013 have been made by Carlos. The Council made some adjustment on the budget to enhance the communication of the vice presidents with their responsible national groups, to improve the website and the preparation of the 50 anniversary book.

4. Regional activity

The vice presidents have given the activity reports in their responsible regions. Most of the national groups are active. However, there are a few national groups without payment of membership fees for more than 4 years, even though some of them still have been active. The Council charges the secretariat to send warning letters to the NGs and urges the vice presidents to push the work in their connected national groups.

5. Active state of Commissions

The members of Technical Overseeing Committee (TOC) reported the active state of their connected Commissions of IAEG indicating that more than 10 Commissions including C10, C16, C17, C19, C20, C22, C24, C25, C28, C29 and C34 keeps active but a few commissions are not. 16 commissions submitted their annual reports. Carlos Delgado, the chair of TOC stressed that the activity of commissions is one of most important parts of IAEG for the academic aspect, and he encourage more effort for their development. 

A new commission on Marine Engineering Geology (C34) applied by professor Yonggang Jia from China has been approved by the Council. 

6. Bulletin

Carlos gave a brief introduction on Bulletin and website. The Council appreciates the work of the teams of the Bulletin and website. 

7. IAEG sponsored meetings

Carlos introduced that the preparation of IAEG2014 Congress in Torino has been going smoothly. Jianfeng Chen from reported that the International Symposium on Coastal Engineering Geology in Shanghai 2012 have been prepared well. 

Entrusted by Runqiu Huang, Faquan Wu made a proposal of IAEG sponsored International Symposium on 5th anniversary of Wenchuan Earthquake 2013 in Chengdu, China. 

On behalf of China National Group and C29, Ruilin Hu proposed to hold the International Symposium and 9th Asian Regional Conference, September 2013 in Beijing, China and also invited the working meetings of IAEG. 

The Council approved the two proposals and decided to hold the IAEG working meeting in Beijing in September 22-23, 2013.
