2011 International Conference on Groundwater Contamination and Water System Security
2011 International Conference on Groundwater Contamination and Water System Security
December 1-2 , 2011 Beijing, China
First Notice--Call for Abstracts and Expressions of Interest
Groundwater is an important source for water supplying and an indispensable ecosystem element. However, many countries such as China have been facing serious problems in groundwater contamination which may not only place a direct and serious harm on the groundwater resource itself, but also pose a significant threat to the use of surface water resources and ecosystems. Thus, groundwater contamination is extremely in connection with water quality security of the entire water system. As a result, the Chinese government recently passed the “National Groundwater Contamination Prevention and Remediation Plan (2011-2020)” in this year in which effective protection of the groundwater environment is aimed at and a number of corresponding national measures for groundwater protection will be launched in next ten years.
Study on groundwater contamination and related water system security is a multidisciplinary research field in which complex research issues are faced. Although research and engineering phases vary in different countries, there exist lots of common interests among the scientists and engineers as well as managers in this field from different nations. Correspondingly, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the U.S. EPA, and the China Geological Survey (CGS) have been co-sponsoring the international conference, in order to further advance the study of groundwater contamination and related water system security, and promote international academic exchanges and research collaboration. The internationally well-known experts and scholars will participate in this conference. The conference will focus on several important and commonly interesting topics such as the latest advances on theories and methods in groundwater contamination investigation and risk assessment, and groundwater contamination control and remediation technologies. The specific objectives of the conference are to facilitate the developments and applications of the key technologies, and enhance effective control and optimal management on groundwater contamination and related water quality security at watershed scales. Importantly, a solid platform for international collaboration on groundwater contamination and pertinent water system security would be expected to establish.
Primary conference topics include (but not limited to):
Effective investigation approaches for groundwater contamination, contamination warning by monitoring, and accident emergency response
Processes of and assessment on interaction between groundwater and surface water
Advances on groundwater modeling for contamination simulations
Human health and ecological risk assessment pertinent to groundwater contamination
Groundwater environment response to the global changes
Advances on the technologies for groundwater contamination control and restoration
Developments of the supporting platform on risk management and the laws and regulations for groundwater protection
Optimal management on water systems pertaining groundwater contamination at watershed scales
The organizing committee of the 2011 International Conference on Groundwater Contamination and Water System Security is co-chaired by Dr. Qin Dahe (Chinese Academician, Director of the Geosciences Division of CAS) and Dr. David Jewett (Acting Director, Ground Water and Ecosystem Restoration Division, the U.S. EPA National Risk Management Research Laboratory). The conference is organized by the Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (GUCAS) and supported by the Ground Water and Ecosystem Restoration Division of the U.S. EPA National Laboratory, Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research of CAS, Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences of CAS, Institute of Geology and Geophysics of CAS, Institute of Hydrogeology and Environmental Geology of Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences (CAGS), Institute of Karst Geology of CAGS, Center for Hydrogeology and Environmental Geology of CGS, Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy for Environmental Planning, Peking University, Tsinghua University, China University of Geosciences (Beijing), China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), Beijing Normal University, and Jilin University.
There are two kinds of presentation: oral and poster. Additionally, participants may choose to submit abstracts, extended abstracts or full papers in English that will be published as the proceedings of the conference. The proceedings will be offered to the relevant sectors for reference in establishing science and technology programs, managing groundwater resources, and implementing groundwater contamination control and remediation projects.
For detailed information about the conference, please log on the conference website: http://gcwss.gucas.ac.cn/. If you are interested in, please fill out the return form (attached in the “Registration” section of the website) and send it back to gcwss2011bj@gmail.com or gcwss2011bj@126.com at your earliest convenience, we will then send you back a formal invitation letter for your document and visa processing.
