 The 8th East Asia International Workshop

Present Earth Surface Processes and Long-term Environment Changes in East Asia

(Earth Surface Processes and Natural Hazards)

      The 8th East Asia International Workshop was held in Chengdu University of Technology on October, 11th, 2011. The congress was advocated by International Association of Geomorphology (IAG) and Japan Geomorphology Unite (JGU) and was organized and sponsored by Prevention of Geological Disasters and Geological Environment Protection National Key Laboratory (Chengdu University of Technology). The vice present of Chengdu University of Technology, the head of Prevention of Geological Disasters and Geological Environment Protection National Key Laboratory Prof. Runqiu Huang was appointed to the chairman of the congress and the vice head of the Key laboratory Prof. Chuan Tang was appointed to the secretary general of the conference. According to different stages of the conference, the program committee chairman of the congress was taken charge by different well-known experts from home and abroad including Prof. YI Sangheon, Prof. OKIMURA Takashi, Prof. HASEBE Noriko, Prof. KIM Juyong, Prof. Ji Sheng, Prof. Chuan Tang and Prof. Yanhong Wu.

 

      There were more than 60 experts attending during the congress, respectively coming from universities, research institutions and production units in China (including Taiwan), South Korea, Japan, Mongolia, Poland and New Zealand etc. These universities, research institutions and production units were Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources, Jeju National University, University of Wroclaw, Victoria University of Wellington, National Taiwan University, Kanazawa University, Saitama University, Rissho University, Pusan National University, Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources of Mongolian Academy of Sciences, Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Southwest China Institute of Railway, Southwest Center of China Geological Bureau, Ministry of Water Resources, Chengdu Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment and Chengdu University of Technology etc. The attendees were prominent experts and scholars who made outstanding contribution in the field of geological disasters, including Prof. KASHIWAYA Kenji, Prof. YI Sangheon, Prof. Ji Sheng, Prof. Yanhong Wu, Prof. Ningsheng Chen, Prof. Xiaoping Yang, Prof. Xiangdong Yang, Prof. Chuan Tang, Prof. Yong Li, Prof. Yunsheng Wang and associate Prof. Bin Yu etc. Meanwhile, Prof. OKIMURA Takashi from Urban Safety Research Center in Kobe University, Japan attended the conference as the special guest. Prof. Runqiu Huang and Prof. KASHIWAYA Kenji from Kanazawa University respectively made opening speeches. 

 

The theme of the conference mainly concentrated in six aspects:

(1)    Geological landscape evolution and the geological disaster process (Earthquakes, landslides and mudslides)

(2)    Global change and regional environmental change

(3)    Modern lake sedimentary process and dating

(4)    Dating of surface processes and dynamics of land-use change

(5)    Paleoclimate simulation and environmental change prediction

(6)    Human activities and natural changes and ecological response

 

There were 29 oral reports and 27 panel reports in all. Moreover, the congress reviewed and received 56 abstracts in all and published the abstracts as a set. Among them, China has 22 papers, Japan 15 papers, Korea 14 papers, Mongolia 2 papers, Poland 2 papers and New Zealand 1 paper.
