Prof. Xiaowu TANG attended 2011 ISRM Council Meeting

The 12th International Congress on Rock Mechanics (ISRM 2011) was held in Beijing, China, Oct. 18-21, 2011. The theme for the ISRM 2011 Congress is "Harmonising Rock Mechanics and the Environment" to emphasize the critical roles of rock mechanics and rock engineering in sustainable development and environment preservation. Celebration of the 50th anniversary of the ISRM was held at the Beijing Congress in 2011, by including a presentation on the development of rock mechanics that has already occurred over the past 50 years as well as that will be anticipated in the future 50 years.

The IRSM Board invited Prof. Zornberg, the Presidnet of IGS, to participate the ISRM Council meeting on October 17. On behalf of Prof. Zornberg, Prof. Xiaowu TANG as the observer attended the ISRM Council meeting. International Tunneling Association (ITA) and International Association of Engineering Geology and Environment  (IAEG) dispatched the observers.

The International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM, http://isrm.net) was founded in Salzburg in 1962 as a result of the enlargement of the "Salzburger Kreis". Its foundation is mainly owed to Prof. Leopold Müller who acted as President of the Society till September 1966. The ISRM is a non-profit scientific association which has 5,000 members and 46 National Groups.

One of the important objectives the current council of IGS　is to “Increase the Connections to International Organizations”. Recently, IGS has accepted the invitation of FedIGS to join the Federation of International Geo-Engineering Societies ( IGS, ISSMGE,ISRM, IAEG).
