IAEG President and his wife start Chinese academic visit with IGGCAS Beijing, China

Invited by Prof. Faquan WU, Secretary General of IAEG, IAEG President Prof. Carlos Delgado and his wife Catarina have been on their Chinese academic visit from Wednesday, 4^th Jan 2012 to Saturday, 14^th Jan 2012. During the visit, they will visit institutes, universities and construction sites in three cities Beijing, Xi’an and Lanzhou. More details will be updated in the coming reports.

At 2:30PM, Wednesday, 4^th Jan 2012, President Prof. Carlos made a lecture in IGGCAS. The meeting was presided by Prof. Li Xiao, Director of Key Laboratory of Engineering Geomechanics. Secretary General IAEG Prof. Faquan WU, vice president of China National Group (CNG) of IAEG Prof. Jianxin HU and Secretary General of CNG Dr. Shengwen QI, IAEG-C29 President Prof. Ruilin HU and IAEG-C24 secretary Prof. Yongshuang ZHANG attended the meeting. Also, IAEG Richard-Wolters 1997 winner Prof. Siqing QIN and IAEG Richard-Wolters 2006 winner Prof. Yanjun SHANG presented. There were scholars and students nearly 100 persons from IGGCAS, China University of Geosciences, Tsinghua University as well.

The topic of lecture, given by President Prof. Carlos, was Soil improvement by grouting: theoretical basis and practical examples.The lecture is mainly focused on justifying the hydraulic fracturing of the soil structure in order to achieve a major improvement in all its mechanical parameters, discussing the mathematical model of fissured rock and the most accurate method for reinstalling its monolithism increasing the value of its mechanical parameters, and taking some practical examples for further discussion. President’s impressive lecture sparked heated discussion among audiences.

Subsequently, Secretary General IAEG Prof. Faquan WU delivered a lecture titled “Brief introduction of engineering geology in China”. Prof. Faquan WU mainly introduced the Chinese engineering geology background, theory development and practices, especially the difficulties of engineering geology in large and great projects in China. Also, Prof. Faquan WU spent lots of time focusing on IAEG development in China.

After the lectures, President Prof. Carlos and his wife Catarina were accompanied by Prof. Li Xiao to visit Key Lab of Engineering Geomechanics in IGGCAS.

In the welcome dinner, the past IAEG president Chinese Academician Sijing WANG and his wife had a meet with President Prof. Carlos and wife Catarina.
