In the symposium, Prof. Yinsheng Ma gave a warm welcome for Prof. Carlos’ visit and briefly introduced the history evolution of Institute of Geomechanics, the scientific research work and achievement on neotectonic movement, engineering geology and geohazard. Prof. YongShuang Zhang briefly introduced the Key Laboratory of Neotectonic Movement & Geohazard of Ministry of Land and Resources and the research achievement on landslide survey and risk assessment in loess plateau of Northwest China and the Wenchuan earthquake region of Southwest China, and crustal stability assessment and engineering geological problems on national major projects such as the Qinghai-Tibet railway and Yunnan-Tibet railway, and C24 recent work as well. Prof. ChengXuan Tan, the Director of Geohazards division, gave a presentation on deep borehole geo-stress measurements and real-time monitoring network construction in Beijing region. He introduced the geo-stress and groundwater level variation pre and post the Mar.11th; 2011, Japan 9.0 earthquake recorded by the Pinggu geo-stress monitoring station and analyzed the process of recorded geo-stress and groundwater level variation during the earthquake.
President Prof. Carlos highly appreciated the achievement of the Institute of Geomechanics on neotectonic movement and geohazard, and expressed his thanks to Institute of Geomechanics as the relied institution of C24, for promoting international academic exchanges on neotectonic and geohazard. President said that the real-time geo-stress monitoring network developed by Institute of Geomechanics is of great significance and the initial achievement is quite creative and pretty impressive. President suggested that the initial achievement be published on the IAEG website and hope Institute of Geomechanics continue to strengthen connection with IAEG and make contribution to set up academic exchange platform and promote the development of Neotectonics and geohazards.
The vice leader of IG, CAGS Prof. Yinsheng Ma presented small gifts to IAEG President Prof.Carlos
After the symposium, President Prof. Carlos and his wife visited the Memorial Hall of Prof. J.S. Lee, the first leader to be appointed to the Institute of Geomechanics, and expressed respect on his outstanding scientific achievements. Then, they visited the Shisanling Geo-stress Monitoring Station of Ministry of Land and Resource, Shisanling Geophysical Experimental Base and Key Laboratory of Neotectonics Movement and Geohazards as well. They investigated the Autolab2000 rock property measurement operating system and other advanced testing equipment and discussed on rock seismic wave properties, the abnormal rock mechanics test with staff and experts on spot.
