The International Union of Geological Sciences( IUGS) Seretatiat moved to Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, Beijing on 1st, Dec. 2012
The IUGS is one of the largest and most active non-governmental scientific organizations in the world. Founded in 1961, IUGS is a member of the International Council of Science. IUGS promotes and encourages the study of geological problems, especially those of world-wide significance, and supports and facilitates international and interdisciplinary cooperation in the earth sciences.
Geological Sciences of PRC has been member of the IUGS since 1976. China has played a more and more important role in IUGS these years. For example, Prof. Zhang Bingxi and Prof. Liu Dunyi held a post of vice president of IUGS executive committee during 1984 to 2000 one after another, Prof. Zhang Hongren held a post of president of IUGS executive committee during 2004 to 2008, 10 Chinese Scientists are holding posts in IUGS including Prof. Dong Shuwen – the Treasurer of IUGS, China held the 30th International Geological Congress in 1996, the editorial department of magzine
IUGS invited China as one of candidates that may hold the secretariate in Aug, 2011. After more than one year’s applying and running, China become the 4th country that the IUGS secretariate set office after Canada, Norway and USA.
